Escape the masses on the Tongariro Winter Crossing

No matter if you’ve done it before or not, everyone’s heard of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing before. It’s the most popular and probably the most populated day tramp in New Zealand.

And rightly so! The Tongariro Crossing is an amazing volcanic experience from your first step all the way through to the finish line 20 kms down the track.

Now imagine yourself in this stunning day walk, without the masses of people you see in Summer and the mountains sugar-coated with snow. Munch on your packed lunch next to the warm Emerald Lakes, silently steaming in the cold air.

Because there is a good chance the tracks will be covered in ice and snow, you’ll need an experienced guide to ensure you stay safe during the Tongariro Winter Crossing. Depending on weather and conditions, you might even need crampons. But don’t worry. Even if it does sound intimidating, no alpine experience is needed for the Winter crossing. As long as you have reasonable fitness, you’ll be fine.

Your accommodation in Tongariro National Park Village

Plateau Lodge is located in the heart of Tongariro National Park Village. The village is about 40 minutes away from Whakapapa ski field and just over an hour from Turoa ski field.

At Plateau Loge, you’ll find a range of accommodation types which are ideal for couples, groups of friends and families. And from July, you can choose to stay in one of their new glamping pods.

After a tiring day in the snow, you’ll just love a soak in the private spa pool. Cook and eat your own meal in the cosy communal area. Or if you feel like going out, restaurants and popular Schnapps Bar are only a few minutes walk away.

Adrift Tongariro

Please reconfirm your tour with Adrift Tongariro the day before the hike!

Weather:

Adrift Tongariro have the right to cancel an adventure should we consider the weather to cause too high a risk.  Adrift Tongariro guarantees a departure in all weather conditions, provided we can offer one safely.

In the event of adverse conditions, the following options are available at either the clients request or Adrift Tongariro’s decision:

Option 1 Adrift Tongariro commences the tour with the intention of completing the tour. If the weather is not safe to proceed along the stated route, then Adrift Tongariro will guide up to a point and turn around. If we return to the start of the hike within 4 hours of tour commencement and if the guide decides to turn the group around for safety as a result of the adverse elements (not client discomfort) then we offer a partial refund. The refund will be calculated as the difference between a full day tour cost, and the half day tour cost plus the cost for lunch. For the Tongariro Alpine Crossing tour: In the event the tour fails to finish at the Ketatahi car park because of conditions, then Adrift Tongariro may offer another trip with a 50% discount applied.

Option 2 At the tour meeting time at the Adrift Tongariro base the Adrift Tongariro team will gauge the safety of the route. Adrift Tongariro will deem the weather to be unsafe if there is consistently 10mm or more of rain combined with wind gusts of 70 km/h or higher, forecasted for the 6 hour period starting at the commencement of the tour. If we believe that the advertised route should not attempted for safety, Adrift Tongariro will suggest either an alternate route where the client will get to see similar terrain as they would on the tour booked without the same exposure to the weather, or offer a postponement to another day, or a full refund.  If the clients accept an alternate route or postponement the option of a refund is forfeited.

Cancellation:

A full refund is given to all cancellations made by clients up to 14 days prior the tour date.  Adrift Tongariro will also offer the ability for the client to postpone to another day or arrange for an alternate tour provided there are other tours running.
