Tasman Glacier Experience

Online Catalogue |  Packages |  South Island |  Mount Cook |  Tasman Glacier Experience

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and experience New Zealand's largest glacier with this great overnight package to the Mount Cook region. Over the last 120 years the Tasman Glacier has had dramatic alterations as climate changes influence the Alps. Your very knowledgeable guides (ex-park rangers and one is also an ecologist) will take you on a 4WD journey on the quiet solitude of the Ball Hut Road followed by a short uphill hike (10 minutes) on a rocky trail with some un-even steps to a spectacular view point overlooking glacial sink holes, ice cliffs, giant icebergs and a landscape not unlike the surface of the moon! Your guide will explain the hidden landscape that you might otherwise miss and with a little more effort you can reach 'Mt. Vernon' for better views looking 10 kilometres up to the white ice of the Tasman Glacier and the Main Divide of mountains. On return to Mt Cook Village take a short stop next to the Blue Stream where Mount Cook Lilies, Mountain Daisies and the fearsome Spear Grass flower in spring and early summer to show you some of the fascinating adaptations alpine plants have developed in order to survive and how the Maori made use of plants. You can take your tour either on arrival or departure day and your accommodation is a spacious motel unit with outside patio area boasting mountain views. The rest of your time is free to explore some of the many walking tracks in the National Park or you may wish to simply relax with a coffee and bite to eat with your NZ$ 10.00 voucher that is also included. A Continental breakfast is included on departure day.
